Rowing in frosty, snowy weather...impressive

Dedicated rowers and coaches on a very snowy, frosty day at Beaver and Elk Lake.  You can see the snow on the boat and there were little icy islands all about.  

Victoria Film Festival 2017 Gala...under the white umbrellas!

Victoria Filmfestival 2017 opened Saturday night with a "spring" themed gala, under the twinkle lights and white umbrellas at the Atrium building.  The glass elevator and organic architecture made for some magical images.

Sometimes, I wonder, do I like it in colour or in black and white more?  Sometimes I just don't know.  I love colour, but I also love the magic or illusion created by black and white imagery.  

I do know that I like to shoot with ambient light and push the limits of available light, shooting with low resolution rather than employ the flash.  A flash can be your friend, but my love of nature light wins almost every time.  So with low resolution, sometimes black and white is my go to.

It's time to smell the flowers!

Bird on a Puck!

Finding old hockey pucks, means finding something to carve and monoprint!  So here's a cute little bird on a puck.  I am also testing out the ipad camera and features on Snapseed to create vintage or toy camera style images...I think I like it ;)

More than half a year ago, I supported a kickstarter project and almost forgot about.  Then just the other day this beauty arrived in the post!  I just need some batteries so I can start playing with this hybrid of lofi plastic toy camera and digital magic!  Images from this camera to come ;)

six-16 Brownie

Here's a mono print of a 1920's six-16 Brownie...art deco at it's best in it's design.  I carved this image into a hockey puck, block printed it with ink, and tweaked it in snapseed.

True Grain

Earlier this summer, I was up and ready for this photo shoot at 5am...in time to catch the bakers at True Grain Bread in Cowichan Bay in full action.  It was a beautiful, hot, hot, hot day on the island which didn't make any of the bakers flinch, but I definitely felt the heat!  It was a privilege to watch these artisans at work.  There was a definite zen to their art.  What I love most about these images is it shows the "handmade-ness' of each pastry and loaf. Hope these photos leave you hungry ;)

This week my friend from Japan returned to visit her second home...Victoria.  It was amazing to reconnect and to spend sometime at two of my favorite places...the ocean and the forest.  The forest is so rooted and grounding.  I spent a while lying on the forest bottom staring at the canopy and amazed at the size  and shapes of the old and new growth...realizing that humans are indeed small!

A roadside stop overlooking the clear cut on West Coast Road is a reminder that to some people, the forest isn't sacred.  Not the most cheerful sight...clear cut...but I think it's important for people to see it in order to understand the need to support more viable options. The reality is that only 26% of the old growth is left on the Southern Coast of BC and if not protected the numbers continue to fall.  The trees or the "lungs of the earth" and homes to many different animals and plants.  As wood based products are beautiful and wonderful, it is hard to watch the old growth taken for granted.  Hopefully by sharing my images of the old growth will help you also come to finding ways to help protect these trees and regions.

A wish tree

Someone started a wishtree in Fernwood and here are a few wishes that caught me...either because they are touching or just plain funny!  I didn't turn the images so you have to tilt your head to see them just as you would if you had seen them in the real tree ;)

The Molly Dolly

Some of my illustrations will be shown at an exhibition featuring art work inspired by John Hughes movies. The work is pretty different and pinker from what I would normally do, but then again do I have a "normal"...maybe not ;)

Akemi Ito of My Picture Book Cafe and other Vancouver area artists are showing...I am not sure if there are any other islanders/out of towners besides me. If you're in Vancouver please take a peek...I also heard that HOT ART Wet City throws amazing opening night parties;)
